Subtle Dreams

Today’s music:

Tame Impala – Solitude Is Bliss

Running, running, running, stop. Today I’ve got the house to myself, a book to enjoy, a pile o’ movies, knitting to fix and finish, an ailing dog to cuddle up and love. There’s a temperature upswing in progress that is glorious. Tired, living out of boxes with subtle dreams to ruminate on from the night, life is going in its starts and stops, and I love it.

  1. awesome song. excellent vdeo.

    • Wasn’t that a cool video – I really liked it too, kept me watching which not many do these days. Glad they didn’t show the decimation of the dog though…I’m queasy when it comes to bad things happening to animals.

  2. sorry, forgot the “i” in video. my typing skills are really sucking lately.

    • No worries, I was thinking the same about my handwriting last night, it’s slipping away into the undecipherable territory.

  3. Some study showed that even when people leave out all the vowels in words, it can still be read and figured out. We’re wired to get it, if we’re halfway intelligent. Well sorts, maybe. Here’s the first sentence without the vowels:

Sme stdy shwd tht vn whn ppl lv t ll th vwls n wrds, t cn stll b rd nd fgrd t.

    [well...the "o" and "u" are helpful for those small 3-letter words...but, it's partly true.
With texting people are much more conversant in shorthand spelling, and eventually the cumbersome and antiquated long dorm with vowels will be an artifact of the past. Like Middle English is today. ]

Maybe I’m over-analyzing it, but the video was interesting in its apocalyptic , fear-filled and paranoid setting. I also noticed that it was all men, and maybe that was the point that this kind of aggressive and desperate fleeing kind of vision is one devoid of women. It had a dream-like quality and a kind of Ayn Rand cult of self versus the world, and of the lone dude heading off against the tide of other men . It was a nightmare-like vision of a time and place devoid of any sense of community or balance – both are qualities that omen have traditionally brought to any culture, society, tribe or place. It was interesting and kept my attention because I kept waiting for something awful to happen. But it was just one of those bad dream Radiohead-like exercises in alienation, angst and aloneness in a cold and anonymous world. That shot of him kicking the guy when he was down was just like a gratuitous teenage wasteland flourish to it all. And who in their right mind would even try to punch an aggressive large dog? I guess that was the point of the video: the guy’s not well and besides it’s all a paranoid alienation nightmare anyway. Not enough of those in music videos these days; maybe because there’s too much of it in real life. So, like during the Great Depression in the ’30′s, people prefer the “rainbows, lollipops and sunshine” cocoon of make-believe happy-happy-joy-joy to the other extreme of the unbearable grimness of the glass-half-empty worldview. And plenty of us careen between the two extremes, savouring the full gamut of life on earth at what we like to think of as the worst of times and the best of times.

    • I hadn’t noticed that it was all men, at least overtly (I think I saw a few unobtrusive in the crows scenes), interesting to think about that. Definitely an apocalyptic free-for-all. Slightly disturbing images, hook-y spaced-out music, one of the few things I’ve seen lately that warranted a few watches in my book. Well done!

  4. speaking of dreams,

    http://whoisioz.blogspot.com/2010/07/deception.html

i like the line, “Jesus Christ, Nolan, eat a fucking muffin.”

    • HAHA, brilliant!!! I’m gonna start saying that methinks :) I like this guy’s ranting style. I wasn’t going to bother seeing as it’s DiCaprio and he’s a ruiner. Have you seen it?

      • No, and since I did try to watch “What Dreams…” there is no way now. Robin Williams and DiCaprio – now that you mention it, i have never seen a DiC movie all the way through. I’m holding out hope for Gordon-Levitt – Brick was interesting and my daughter thinks he’s super cute, so i have at least a couple more yrs of being subjected to him.

  5. on the fence about this one – http://www.thewoodmansmovie.com/ I read about it in Film Comment and thought,”She would have been Sophie Calle if she survived,” then went on youtube to learn more and found this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWqpt3YWnso . spooked now.

    • Wow, I haven’t heard of her – thx for linking. Looks pretty intense, and what amazing photos! I can see the spooked…Definitely gonna look into this!
